About Me

Having begun on viola in his hometown Whyalla, Neil's career has taken him all around the world, including to Europe as soloist. Neil has performed and toured with the Adelaide, Melbourne, Tasmanian and Sydney Symphony Orchestras (upon holding an SSO fellowship in 2012), as well as with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and its sister orchestra ACO2 with whom he was an ‘Emerging Artist’. He enjoyed two years of touring with ‘The Cat Empire’ and features as soloist and guest artist on their DVD ‘Live at the Bowl’. Neil regularly performs at the Sydney Opera House with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra for Opera Australia and the Australian Ballet.

Primarily involved in playing chamber-music, he has been fortunate enough to have performed alongside Pekka Kuusisto, Kristian Winther, Richard Tognetti, Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Simone Young, Brett Dean, Lisa Moore and others.
2015 proved to be a particularly exciting year for him having been invited to join the highly acclaimed 'Omega Ensemble' as well as co-founding 'The Nano Symphony' with his wife, clarinettist Catherine Thompson - www.thenanosymphony.com

Subject

I offer private tuition based around what students’ needs are a particular given time, with an overarching strategy in mind at all times and, at the end of the day, an aim to enable students to be free to play what their heart desires without being faced with all the negative setbacks that threaten all players that are both young and young at heart.
Having had many years of study with the world’s greatest string teachers and a formidable professional career to date, I currently hold teaching positions at multiple schools and music institutions as well as conducting posts and a full time performing career - what this enables me to do is to pass on not just the technical fundamentals that are intrinsic to such an intricate art form, but also the frame of mind, the confidence and the drive it takes to flourish - the proof is in the pudding: I have a 100% student retention record, they exceed their own expectations continually and gain immense satisfaction and fulfilment from being enabled to accomplish great things, both at the micro and macro levels.
Feel free to discuss any questions or queries you may have - I certainly look forward to hearing from you.
