One of the biggest achievements in my life thus far was in 2016, when I secured by first ever taste of employment. But I can’t say it was the easiest of tasks, as entering the workforce without any experience is challenging enough.
How to get a job with no experience?
With persistence, courage and effort, the journey to becoming employed became a whole lot easier. Even with no experience, what counts is all the hard work you put in to applying. The more positions you apply for, the higher the chance you have of getting employed for the very first time. Sit down with a friend or family member and try answering various, possible interview questions that you could be asked.
- How to get a job with no experience tip 1 – Persistence:
I think this is my favourite word when it comes to job hunting, and I also believe it’s one of the most critical attributes needed.
When I first began to look for a job, I believe I lacked persistence.More so, it would be a lack of determination and it would end up with me applying for only one singular position, and having to wait for their 30 day response only for them to decline me.
It wasn’t until my siblings hassled me to be ‘persistent’ that I caught onto the idea. It was a concept of fighting for that interview.
No matter what the job was. I had taught myself to just keep handing out my resume nonstop. It didn’t matter if it was a retail job, or fast food joint. All that mattered was you repeatedly trying and trying again.
You will eventually get that phone call asking you for an interview, maybe even sooner than you expect.Even with no experience, what counts is all the hard work you put in to applying. The more positions you apply for, the higher the chance you have of getting employed for the very first time.
- How to get a job with no experience tip 2 – Courage:
Searching for a job can be quite a harrowing experience, especially when it’s your very first time doing so. I think in many ways, having courage can outweigh the positives of having previous employment experience.
The best way I learnt of expressing my courage was by going into stores and handing in my resume. This is great, proactive action to take, no matter your experience. If you can muster the courage to go into stores and hand in your resume while also maintaining good attire and attitude, you’re guaranteed to make a great first impression.
You also stand out from those who apply online, and those who apply with a lack of interest. If you get to the interview process by using your courage, it already proves that you can go a long way. For this reason, don’t be afraid going into your first interview. For many, fighting nerves is hard and getting the courage to actually go to your interview may become a challenge. I believe it’s best for you to build up that courage in the time before your interview. Sit down with a friend or family member and try answering various, possible interview questions that you could be asked.
It will better boost your confidence when it comes to the actual interview, and your nerves will settle. In the end, courage can get you far in finding a job no matter your experience. You just need to get over the first hurdle.
- How to get a job with no experience tip 3 – Effort:
This is where all the attributes come together. Effort is a requirement when seeking a job, especially without any experience. And it all begins with what you put into your resume.A rushed resume isn’t going to get you anywhere.
A resume that’s just a ‘copy and paste’ of a template won’t do you any favours either. This is when effort is vital.Be unique and take the time to actually make your resume stand out. If you put in the time and commitment in, your resume is going to stand out from all the others in a positive way.
You want to be the one that catches the managers eye.Remember, effort and persistence are a team. The more effort you put in, the more determined you become to securing a job. Effort can also be helpful in small areas. For example, if you were to achieve an interview but don’t secure the job, don’t give up. Go the extra mile with great effort and give the place a call, and ask them what you did well and what needs to be improved on. This will greatly help you for future interviews.
If you put the effort into every single part of a job process, the time that you contribute will pay off and even without experience, you’ll be almost guaranteed to secure a job.
In the end, these three attributes is what helped me to get my first ever job, with absolutely no experience. I went from applying to KFC and waiting for a 30 day response to completely changing my motivation and getting my first ever interview and job, while continuing to put in effort, courage and persistence.
I later earned myself my second job at Toys R’ Us which was such a fantastic place to work for, but now I’m off to discover new opportunities. Once you get over that first hurdle, never give up.
You’ll get that job, and earn some experience, even though you didn’t have any to begin with.
