Pros and cons of living in Adelaide
By Kayla Hamilton
Reasons for living in Adelaide?
- Does not have a sense of urgency
- Public art, free museums and art galleries, festivals popping off around the year
- A quirky little place, it is never hard to find a band playing somewhere, nor is it hard to find a good coffee
“Peaceful,” is one of the words used to describe a city that so many others like to criticise, but when talking to those who have come from the hustle and bustle of super cities; places like Seoul, Tokyo, New York…Adelaide has a rather inviting charm.
It does not have a sense of urgency, that incredible tiring strain of bigger cities. The strain of pushing against people on a crowded train, the suffocating beat down of heat from a towering concrete jungle nor the bitter mumbles of those who you may accidentally obstruct when trying to catch your breath in a sea of people bustling to their next destination.
It quite simple potters, the air in Adelaide is one of it will get done, it will happen, we will make progress, but we will not stress out doing so.
Do not mistake Adelaide though for being a chilled out, lie back kind of city though. It is not your lay back in the Sun sort of relaxation and complacency. The people of Adelaide do not neglect what needs to be done, they no longer sleep in on a Sunday nor do they wait for somebody else to come along. No, while they are not breaking their backs to complete everything, they do still close down most of the city at five pm on the weekends, they still maintain efficiency.
Adelaide is a quirky little place, with pockets of unusual, spattered throughout the wider regions. It is never hard to find a band playing somewhere, nor is it hard to find a good coffee.
With public art, free museums and art galleries, festivals popping off around the year and always somebody, somewhere playing a sporting match, if you are into the fringe and untapped talent, Adelaide is quite the space. It may not always attract the big names that the East Coast does, but many acts that have reached International success, were bred in good old Adelaide.
That is the charm of Adelaide in a nutshell. Adelaide may not be marked as the most outrageous, most lively or grandest destination. It may not be seen as the place to chase huge careers, worldwide opportunities or the most glamourous of places, but Adelaide will deliver.
What ever you want, whether it be a good meal, great coffee, a quiet place to call home, a beautiful beach…it may not be on the grandest of scales, but it delivers in a way that is always satisfying. Also, who can argue…you are a stones throw away from some of the greatest wineries in the world, so of course the citizens of Adelaide know a thing or two about good taste.
