Digital marketing is an excellent field to work in. It offers a ton of possibilities that allows you to be creative and engaged. No matter the business or brand you are working with, you need to constantly be on your toes and be ready to admit defeat.
With all of that said, studying to become a digital marketing is an interesting topic.
There’s no direct path to becoming a successful digital marketer and everybody’s journey seems to vary. It opens the discussion up on what skills should be studied, what can only be learned by doing, and where’s the best place to start.
Well, let’s dive into what it’s like studying digital marketing:
What is digital marketing?
Digital marketing is the marketing of products or services using digital technologies, mainly on the Internet, but also including mobile phones, display advertising, and any other digital medium.
Digital marketing’s development since the 1990s and 2000s has changed the way brands and businesses use technology for marketing. As digital platforms are increasingly incorporated into marketing plans and everyday life, and as people use digital devices instead of visiting physical shops, digital marketing campaigns are becoming more prevalent and efficient.

Is digital marketing for you?
No matter what career you’re looking into, you should definitely take a minute to ask yourself if it is really for you. And there’s no real yes or no answer to this that will make up your mind. If you feel like it is for you, then you should do quite well. If you don’t think it is for you – well why? And what can you do to make the transition easier?
A few questions to ask yourself to find out if digital marketing is for you:
- Do you love to consistently create creative content?
- Can you handle many things at the same time and accomplish lots?
- Do you approach things with a creative and unique mindset?
- Do you work well on your own and can accomplish goals without direct supervision?
- Do you like to enjoy seeing a project come together after a lot of hard work?
If you answer the majority of these with a ‘YES’, then digital marketing is probably something you’ll enjoy and excel at. These 5 questions are (what I think) the most important traits to have in digital marketing.
If you answered ‘NO’ to a few of my above questions, maybe studying to become a digital marketer is not for you.
Skills that will help you as a digital marketer
Similar to what I talked about above, here are a few skills that will help you as a digital marketer.
- You should be able to track numbers closely and have a knack for organising data in a way that makes sense and can be reported back to a manager or a client.
- You should be a creative thinker who enjoys putting their own spin on things.
- By looking through other companies and seeing today’s trends, you should be able to take what you see and adapt it to the account you’re working on.
- You should be able to understand people, understand an audience, and be able to adapt your content so it speaks directly to them.
As far as trained skills you should look into learning as you begin your training to become a digital marketer, I’d recommend looking into beginner graphic design and video editing courses.
