The Truth About Dealing with Study Burnout
Study burnout can be a fickle beast at the best of times. It can seem like you have just started the semester and are getting acquainted with the class schedule and boom: Midterms.
It is easy for people to criticise the student life when they have not lived it. Hell, I am guilty of it.
I would like to take some time today and share my experiences around dealing with study burnout, the elusive balanced life, and some mistakes I have made, and lessons learned along the way.
They say for every 1-hour class you should study for 3.
So, a bit about me: I am a chef by trade turned sales pro turned corporate customer service leader to full-time Music student. I reached this point where I was sick of doing a job I hated and dived into a Music Degree at the age of 32. I am an independent rapper and I have gone all-in.
I think it is fair to say that anyone who is studying or trying to better themselves through up-skilling deserves some recognition. It is not an easy thing to do. Especially if you are going into a line of study that is brand new to you and the content is foreign.
So, let me just say big ups to you.
Case Study – Study Burnout
Let us get back to the topic: Dealing with Study Burnout. I am going to share my 3 top tips for maximising effective study and minimising study burnout. Before I do though, let me just say that this is by no means the one true way to avoid or lower study burnout. Different things work for different people and I am only sharing what works for me.
Tip 1: Set a timer.
Try 15 minutes of study to begin. We can all be massive procrastinators, but everyone can handle 15 minutes of study. If not, try 10 minutes. When the timer goes off, have a break for 10 minutes. Rinse and repeat.
Tip 2: Study every day. Even for 10 minutes.
They say that consistent study for shorter periods is much more effective than 2 hours of study once a week.
Tip 3: Celebrate your progress.
We are so quick to put ourselves down when we are not getting the results we want. It is important to practice self-care and celebrate the wins along your study journey… No matter how small they may seem.
Dealing with Study Burnout
It is important to make sure you are putting in the time and effort into your studies so as not to feel overwhelmed. It is also equally important to not jeopardize your health whilst doing so. Do something nice for yourself. Get a massage, go out for a meal, whatever means something to you.
I was speaking about this topic with one of my teachers recently and she goes:
“Pete, you are being too hard on yourself. Enjoy the process man. Learning something new is hard and you must be kind to yourself. You are going to make mistakes. And that’s OK.”
I think that sums it up perfectly. I am my own worst critic and I need to constantly remind myself to take it easy on myself and keep putting one foot in front of the other.
