A characteristic of square numbers

28 Apr 2020 46 Views Richard

The square numbers (1, 4, 9, 16 etc  ie the square of the natural numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 etc) exhibit an interesting characteristic that may not be noticed by students who only know up to 144.

The question is: how many of the integers 0, 1, 2,...,9 are possible for the units digit of the square numbers?

There is a paper on my website www.kenderdinemathstutoring.com.au  (Modular Arithmetic) that answers this question. I'll also give the answer on the next post.
