About Me

I hold a Master of Music (Music Performance) in classical guitar at the University of Melbourne, which I completed in July 2015. My teacher was Tonié Field (Masters in Performance). While a student at Blackburn High, I became acquainted with jazz styles while playing with one of the school's stage bands, and was taught guitar by Mr Steve Burch.

I have prepared students for concerts and for AMEB examinations in classical guitar. In my teaching, I focus in particular on sightreading skills, ensemble skills and correct right hand technique. I believe in the importance of selecting repertoire that is both musically valuable and developmentally appropriate. I am passionate about the classical guitar, and I love introducing students to its beautiful and diverse repertoire.

I am an active performer, and recently performed in the same concert as celebrated Brazilian guitarist Paulo Aragao. This is in addition to performing as a soloist for the National Gallery of Victoria International's Italian Masterpieces exhibition. I also perform at the regular concerts that classical guitar teacher Mr Ron Payne organises for his students, and I am currently performing as a soloist at the RACV's Bourke St centre. This week I performed in a masterclass held by classical guitarists Rupert Boyd and Jacob Cordover (Australian Guitar Duo), and will soon participate in a masterclass to be held by classical guitarist Matt Withers (Head of Guitar, University of Canberra; member of Brew Guitar Duo and Guitar Trek).

I am passionate about chamber music, and have experience in arranging chamber music for guitar. I have also premiered chamber works by Piotr Nowotnik and Dr Elliott Gyger. Additionally, I have experience as a performer in a guitar ensemble context, as I was a member of the University of Melbourne Guitar Ensemble during 2012 under the direction of Dr Ken Murray.

I hold a current Working With Children Check Card (EXPIRES 21/10/2019).

Subject

I tailor lessons to suit each student's goals, strengths and weaknesses. I prepare students for assessments offered by bodies such as the AMEB.

A crucial skill I impart to students is the skill of effective practise through conscious awareness of the challenges being posed by the material being studied. Practising by mindless repetition is useless, and I find that an almost 'scientific' approach to problem-solving is the most effective and secure way of learning repertoire.

I firmly believe that secure right hand technique is the cornerstone of classical guitar playing. A good right hand technique ensures that the sound being produced is good, and an understanding of the principles of right hand technique provides the player with an arsenal of tonal colours to choose from.

In lessons, I focus on sight-reading skills, particularly in the upper positions of the fretboard. Facility in this area allows for quicker learning of material.

I teach all ages and from beginners to advanced students.
