About Me

Master in Classical Guitar Performance (University of Alicante) (Spain), Bachelor of Music Performance (Honours) (VCA & MCM The University of Melbourne), Qualified AMEB teacher, Working with Children Check

Evan Hopkins is a passionate guitar teacher with over 6 years experience teaching both privately and in schools. Evan’s love for music first became apparent while receiving lessons at a young age and it is this care and dedication to his instrument that Evan seeks to instil in all his students through his carefully planned lessons. Evan believes that it is through stimulating, engaging and enjoyable lessons that students can achieve their potential and reap the benefits that a music education offers.

Evan’s teaching style is informed by rigorous academic research that he has completed throughout his studies. His Honours graduation dissertation at The University of Melbourne was titled, ‘The effects of focused attention on the efficiency of practice: a preliminary investigation into the practice behaviours of guitarists’ and incorporated original data from research undertaken as part of the dissertation. This research corroborated previous studies done in this field that showed that it is only with deliberate and directed practise that progress is made.

During his studies, Evan has observed a great number of the world’s finest classical guitar teachers and performers giving masterclasses including David Russell, Manuel Barrueco, Slava Grigoryan, Tim Kain, Pavel Steidl, Ricardo Gallén, Paul O’Dette, Hopkinson Smith and Shin-Ichi Fukuda amongst many others. Watching and participating in these lessons has further crafted Evan’s teaching style into one backed by observation, academic research, personal experience and a practical history of teaching in the studio.

An enthusiastic and attentive teacher, Evan inspires the highest levels of musicianship from his students. Evan’s creative, novel and academically grounded teaching style ensures that students are engaged at all times and excited to pursue a music education.

Evan Hopkins is quickly gaining a reputation as one of Australia’s foremost classical guitarists of the next generation. As an international performer he has played throughout Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany and Spain and is a regular performer throughout Australia in concert and on live national radio. Evan has studied with many of the world’s leading concert guitarists and has played in masterclasses with David Russell, Manuel Barrueco, Slava Grigoryan, Tim Kain, Pavel Steidl, Ricardo Gallén, Paul O’Dette, Hopkinson Smith, Carlo Marchione, Alvaro Pierri, Zoran Dukic, Lorenzo Micheli, Florian Larousse, Claudio Maccari, Fabio Zanon, Roberto Aussel, Shin-Ichi Fukuda, Laura Young and Oman Kaminsky.

An advocate of new Australian music, Evan has been working closely with author and composer, Jeremy Dickey, to record a CD of original compositions. This CD is to be released shortly.

Active throughout the Australian guitar community, in 2014 Evan co-founded the Melbourne Guitar Foundation with fellow guitarist and Masters student, Michael MacManus. The MGF was established in order to develop performance opportunities for local guitarists. In addition to presenting concerts by international and local guitarists, the MGF offers students masterclasses, scholarships and competition opportunities. Further details can be found by visiting the Melbourne Guitar Foundation website.
