About Me

I'm a jazz pianist, composer, improviser and current PhD researcher based in Lilyfield in Sydney's Inner West. As a teacher I’m passionate about creativity, and aim to offer students an open, engaged and stimulating environment for learning music. I believe that improvisation is one of the most natural, vital, but also often overlooked skills in music training, and that with the right instruction anyone can learn to improvise - whether it’s a jazz solo or a cadenza to a Mozart concerto. I hope to give students the tools necessary to be able to perform or compose the music they want to, the way they want to. I teach classical and jazz performance, improvisation, composition and music theory to students of all ages, and I’m familiar with the AMEB and ABRSM (UK) syllabuses. All lessons are tailor-made to you, and while it's sometimes helpful to get constructive, objective feedback from an examiner, students are under no pressure to sit exams! Music making should always be fun and about the process, not the grade. That said I sat the ABRSM Jazz Piano grades in my teens, and I think it’s an outstanding resource and introduction to jazz piano and improvisation. With experienced students I cover advanced improvisation concepts such as reharmonisation and strategies for melodic line construction, as well as exploring more contemporary, 20th century piano music. Feel free to call me to discuss! Bio: Originally from New Zealand, I crossed the ditch from Auckland in 2009 to continue my Bachelor of Music at the Sydney Conservatorium. In 2013 I was awarded the Bell Award for Young Australian Jazz Artist of the Year and placed 2nd at the National Jazz Awards at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival. As a performer I keep a busy schedule both as a bandleader and a sideman with a number of local bands. In the last few years I’ve toured with my trio across Australia and New Zealand, as well as performed in the United States, Germany, France, Italy, New Caledonia and Samoa. Recently I spent two weeks touring across Japan to release an album I recorded in collaboration with Japanese musicians in 2014. My doctoral study explores methods of fusing composed and improvised music, and uncovering means to facilitate stimulating and creative music making.
