Ms Hien Dang is the Principal and operator of HD Tutoring which is a boutique style tutoring centre specialising in English and Mathematics tuition for school aged students from years 3 to 12 HSC.

At HD, we believe that the best way to achieve success in the HSC English course is to ensure that all students have a thorough grasp of the basics and fundamentals, starting from the early primary and junior years of high school.

Early mastery of the basic skills, particularly grammar, punctuation and syntax, as well as the ability to recognise language features and techniques, is vital to ensuring an understanding of the more complex aspects of English in the senior years and beyond.

Subject

Primary School (Stages 2 & 3):
Stages 2 and 3 are perhaps the most important in a child’s educational development as these are the years which form the foundation of their future schooling. How well adjusted a child becomes later in life and their approach to study will be determined by their preparation during these crucial primary school years. This is the perfect time for children to begin tutoring as most have reached the required level of maturity and independence needed to maintain focus and concentration in a tutoring environment. In order to ensure future success in the later primary school years and beyond, students will focus on the basics of English which will prepare them for reading, writing and comprehending.

Junior High School (Stages 4 & 5):
The transition from primary to high school is often a very daunting time for many students. Having already grasped the basics and fundamentals from their earlier schooling, it is now time to embrace the variety of topics and outcomes set out in the new Stage 4 and 5 curriculum. These include the mastery of literary techniques used in poetry, fiction and drama as well as visual techniques used in film and print media. These are particularly important stages where students are also required to identify and compose a variety of text types while developing the skills to critique and interpret information, ideas and arguments within both literary and non-literary texts.

Senior High School (Stage 6):
In order to successfully engage with and respond to the texts set for study in the HSC, it is imperative that students become familiar with the course structure as well as the rubric. In addition, students must develop a firm grasp of the wide scope of language and visual techniques inherent in their texts. With a particular focus on the Area of Study as well as the expectations within each of the three Modules and their Electives, students will be guided through a variety of articles, extracts and works of past and contemporary literature to ensure they can recognise the different modes of language forms, features and structures.
