About Me

I am a freelance professional opera singer having recently worked with Opera Australia, Victorian Opera and New Zealand Opera. I am friendly, approachable, motivated and passionate about all things music. I am an advocate for music education, and I am also a firm believer that music can be an extremely powerful tool in strengthening communities and breaking down social barriers.

I have been a private tutor for 6 years and I have a diverse range of teaching experiences from privately tutoring secondary school students (for VCE exam preparation) and university students to conducting lectures, leading singing masterclasses and conducting private singing lessons.

My availability is flexible and will cater to your needs.

Subject

Through individually tailored lessons, I aim to maximise your learning, progress and retention and equally importantly, instil a love for music in all its forms. I am committed to supporting high quality music making, learning and development.

Music theory is vital for the deeper understanding of music. It is an extremely broad area and depending on your needs, we can cover:
- how to read music
- the difference between noise and music
- music notation
- the elements of music
- key signatures
- time signatures
- tonality
- rhythm
- dynamics
- scales and modes
- chords
- musical form/structure

Lesson durations that I offer are: 30 minutes, 45 minutes or 60 minutes.

Lessons are provided on a one to one basis. For steady progress and maximum retention of content, a lesson once a week is recommended.

Through individually tailored lessons, I aim to maximise your learning, progress and retention and equally importantly, instil a love for music in all its forms. I am committed to supporting high quality music making, learning and development.

The two areas that I particularly focus on are: aural (listening) training and sight singing.

Aural Training:
Training your ears to be able to critically analyse the music you hear will allow you to enjoy and appreciate music on a whole new level. It will also allow you to improve your intonation, and generally become a more sensitive musician, with the ability to more successfully perform within an ensemble.

My lessons will be individually tailored to your needs. Generally we will focus on:
-Chord recognition (maj, min, dim, dom7, half diminished, full diminished, augmented)
-Pitch (recognising higher or lower pitch, singing one part, etc.)
-Cadences
-Intervals
-Rhythmic transcription
-Melodic transcription
-Memory

I can help prepare secondary students for their exams, as well as provide general aural skill practice for secondary and university students who want to supplement their learning.

Sight singing:
Throughout these lessons we will break down the process of sight singing. We will focus on interval recognition, and rhythm, whilst also touching on the importance of understanding harmony and tonality when quickly analysing a melody or song to sight sing. Over time, you will be able to sing a melody from start to finish with only the use of a reference pitch.

As I am a professional freelance opera singer, I find the skill to be vitally import in aiding quick and accurate music learning.

Through individually tailored lessons, I aim to help you unlock your natural sound, to develop a healthy, sustainable singing technique, to diminish your vocal inhibitions and to gain confidence. I am committed to supporting high quality music making, learning and development.

Each lesson will incorporate a mix of breathing and simple vocal exercises to increase the range and flexibility of your voice as well as improve vocal stamina. We will then apply this technical work to repertoire of your choice.

My specialisation is classical technique as I am a classically trained freelance operatic tenor. I am also happy to teach individuals who are looking to improve their ability in singing music theatre, jazz and pop repertoire.

I can help prepare secondary students for their VCE singing exams, AMEB singing exams, and Trinity College London (in Australia) singing exams. I can also help university level students prepare for concerts, exams and eisteddfods, provide advice on audition preparation and audition repertoire choices, as well as provide guidance on role preparation.

I also specialise in the pronunciation of Italian, German and French repertoire and am proficient in the use of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).

Lesson durations that I offer are: 30 minutes, 45 minutes or 60 minutes.
