I am currently studying a dual degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Bachelor of Mathematics at The University of Queensland on an academic scholarship. My current GPA is 7.00 / 7.00, I have been selected as a Hawken Scholar (top 1% of my university cohort), and I have received the Dean's Commendation for Academic Excellence every semester of my enrolment.
I graduated from the Queensland Academy of Science, Mathematics and Technology in 2017 with an International Baccalaureate score of 44, equivalent to an ATAR 99.85 and very high OP1. I consistently achieved the following marks in my subjects throughout the entirety of high-school without fail:
Mathematics HL - 7/7
Physics HL - 7/7
Chemistry SL - 7/7
English SL - 7/7
Chinese SL - 7/7
I also achieved an SAT score of 1550 (750 Reading/Writing + 800 Math), 24/24 on the SAT Essay, 800 on the SAT II Mathematics Subject Test, and 800 on the SAT II Physics Subject Test. Each of these individual scores places me within the top 1% of SAT takers worldwide.
Since graduating from high-school in 2017, I have been providing private and group tutoring to students from schools in Brisbane and the Gold Coast. I consistently attend to over twenty-five individual clients (ranging from Grade 5 to university) per week. This client base has been primarily accumulated via word-of-mouth referrals alone, with no money spent on advertising. I have a proven track record, improving nearly all of my students’ results by at least an entire grade.
I also bring enormous value to sessions in terms of the study techniques and skills I can offer. I'm a seminar presenter for Elevate Education, involving travelling to a variety of both high-performing and low-performing schools across Queensland and New South Wales delivering seminars to students from Grades 7 - 12 on study skills, time management, examination techniques, motivation, and many more. Throughout my time as a presenter, I've absorbed an extremely large number of proven study skills that are guaranteed to drastically increase student performance with little to no increase in effort, and I've received perfect feedback ratings from 98.9% of the students and teachers that I've presented to.
In addition to private and group tutoring, I am employed by the Queensland Academy of Science, Mathematics and Technology to deliver weekly high-school Mathematics and Physics lessons to classes consisting of approximately thirty students as part of the "Study Support" program. Prior to each lesson, I independently prepare my own content material and accumulate learning resources for the students, and make sure to plan lessons carefully according to their collective needs. Classes are to be delivered in an engaging, yet professional manner, ensuring that students benefit highly from their time with me in regards to being well educated on the subject material and remaining enthused with the content. I was among the first Study Support teachers ever employed by QASMT, and have been a driving force in developing the program into a huge success, with a large proportion of the school now participating, and the number of requests to join my class more than doubling since my commencement.
Further evidence of my strong mentoring abilities lie in my employment experience and numerous volunteer experiences. I am employed by Code Camp, and as an instructor, my role centres around teaching fundamental coding skills, application design, and website development to large groups of students aged between five to thirteen years, whilst also ensuring that they remain focused and engaged with the material for long periods of time. I was also selected as a student mentor for the 2018-2019 University of Queensland Young Scholars Program, the primary component of which is a five-day academic and leadership residential camp for approximately 200 of the most high-achieving secondary school students in Queensland. My responsibilities included being a friendly, reliable, and trustworthy point of contact for the students, organising and facilitating interactive sessions for them, and inspiring them to both find and pursue their passions. Finally, I am a tennis coach for many players aged four to thirteen, involving implementing training sessions, umpiring practice matches, and attending junior competitions.
I'm extremely passionate about giving students a hand in the areas they need it most, and making a significant difference in the marks they receive! For me, tutoring is about providing students with the type of guidance and support that school teachers in crowded classrooms simply cannot offer.
I often notice, for instance, that the feedback students receive on their assignments is shallow, vague, and oftentimes just very difficult to interpret. This is because with tens, oftentimes hundreds of assignments to mark and review, teachers simply cannot be bothered dedicating a substantial amount of effort to each paper, and certainly not the amount of effort that a typical student would appreciate.
Moreover, it is common for students in classes to not understand a section of course material that is being delivered, and this is because teachers are first, unable to stop the entire class to explain a concept to several students, and second, are often just unable to provide an explanation that is clear, concise, and meaningful to their pupils. This obviously has a direct knock-on effect to examinations, whereby students are unable to solve questions correctly or write high-level responses simply because they have not been taught the content in a way that makes sense to THEM.
In my tutoring sessions, I ensure that I ask my students well in advance of the session what it is they would like a hand with, whether this be explaining a Maths concept, providing feedback on a Physics assignment, or scaffolding out an English essay response. I then come to the session well prepared, knowing exactly what my student wants and how I can deliver it to them, as well as having the relevant learning resources at hand such as practice questions or exemplar assignments. During sessions, I am very responsive and interactive with my students, always giving them the opportunity to ask questions to clear up any uncertainties, and constantly checking that whatever I am saying is being well understood.
At the end of the day, tutoring sessions with me are really about YOU - come sit down with me for sixty minutes or more, and I guarantee that I will work my absolute hardest to give you the best experience possible. Having received numerous national and state accolades in the areas of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and English, and even travelling to China to compete in an international academic competition against students from all over the globe, I believe that I am more than capable of giving you a huge boost in your grades!
