About Me

My name is Francis Nguyen, a piano teacher, pianist and university student based in Camberwell, Melbourne. I have taught young children aged 4-14 the essential basics of learning piano and strive to establish solid foundations for future playing. Having taught for almost a year at my home in Camberwell, I like to think that I can cater for any musical need whether it be learning how to play piano, learning popular music with and without music, music theory, and exploring a wide range of musical genres. I can also tutor VCE students studying 3/4 Music Performance and teach AMEB music theory.

I have been playing piano for 14 years and throughout that time I have picked up many tips and tricks that I would love to teach your child. I think that my age (18) would perfectly suit any child as I am not too old and only recently finished school. As a college prefect I was constantly interacting with children of a younger age demographic and was regarded by my peers and teachers as resilient and empathetic.

I am currently in my first year studying a Bachelor of Biomedicine at Melbourne University . In secondary school I studied at St Kevin’s College in Toorak, where I graduated only last year. In my final year, I was a College Prefect, Captain of Music, and Ensemble Leaders of the Senior Choir and St Patrick’s Cathedral Choir. At school I learnt piano under the guidance of Dr Mark McGee, an AMEB Federal Examiner and Assistant Director of Music at St Kevin’s College. An eminent pianist, chaser musician and pedagogue, I was able to develop my musicianship and piano skills through his unique yet effective teaching methods, such methods which I aim to utilise when teaching pupils.

It was through Dr McGee that I was able to complete AMEB grades preliminary to 8 with high standards, and achieved my Associate in Music, Australia (AmusA) for piano in 2016. In 2017 I completed the subject of Music Performance as a 3/4 VCE subject and received a study score of 46, placing me in the top 4% of students in the state for that subject. This contributed to my ATAR of 95.25 in 2018 which placed me in the top 5% of the state. I also completed AMEB Theory of Music first grade to sixth grade.

Piano is not my only forte in music, however. At school I learnt trombone for seven years, where I also participated in various jazz ensembles and concert bands, my jazz experience highlighted by my participation in ‘Generations in Jazz’, a national jazz competition held in Mt Gambier where the band I was in placed 3rd in the state for our respective division.

Furthermore, I also have a great singing ability, highlighted by my participation in the St Patrick’s Cathedral Choir as a student for eight years. The choir rehearses once a week and performs at solemn Sunday morning mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral. Eight years of singing church music composed by a plethora of composers such as Mozart, Haydn and Palestrina has significantly expanded my knowledge of music and its history. I am wishing to continue my participation in the choir as a tertiary scholar this year.

My teaching style puts the pupil first at all times. Whilst I ensure that all core skills are being addressed each lesson (playing, reading, listening, understanding, technique) the means to which this is achieved is through an understanding of what the pupil enjoys rather than a predetermined pathway that is used for everyone.

Spaces in my schedule are very limited and will go quickly. If you wish to try out a lesson with me I currently have an offer of a free trial lesson.

Please get in teach ASAP to book in your trial.

I look forward to hearing from you.
