Gareth Thomson is one of the most exciting proponents of the new generation of Australian drummers. The 24 year old Victorian College of The Arts graduate is fast gaining a reputation for his innovative and versatile approach, with a style that has been described by audience and colleagues alike as inventive and technically stunning.
The Melbourne based drummer and producer currently plays with 10-piece 80’s synth funk group Sex On Toast, and singer/pianist Kate Kelsie-Sugg (Melbourne Music Prize and National Jazz Award runner-up). He also plays for indie/electronic trio Big Creature; the quirky pop starlet, Nussy; and is a member of the Melbourne Pet Sounds Orchestra, lead by Hiatus Kaiyote’s Paul Bender.
Performance highlights include a trio collaboration with iconic New York saxophonist/composer Tim Berne and local experimental luminary Anthony Pateras at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival; working in multiple productions as first call drummer/percussionist with Victorian Opera; and recording and embarking on a 10-show national tour with relocated American saxophonist/composer, Bär McKinnon (from Mr Bungle and Secret Chiefs 3).
He has worked with musicians such as Michael Paynter, Dr. Tony Gould, Lakyn Heperi, Demian, Peter Combe, Stephen Magnusson, Oren Ambarchi, Cactus Channel, Sean Baxter and many more.
In 2013 Gareth was the recipient of two Australia Council grants which funded study with over a dozen of the world’s most highly regarded drummers. Whilst travelling between New York, New Orleans and Los Angeles he studied with Dave Elitch, Chris Coleman, John Riley, Chris Johnson, Mark Guiliana, Shawn Pelton, Clarence Penn and more. Whilst studying at the Victorian College of the Arts he studied under Simon Barker, Eugene Ughetti, and Graham Morgan.
